Antarctica Time lapse: A Year on IceFeb 22, 2012 Go to www.antarcticimages.com for a better quality version of this clip. Blog www.frozensouth.com Time-lapse video filmed in Antarctica, in and around McMurdo Station and Scott Base. Each year the sun is below the horizon for 4 months in the middle of winter, and above the horizon for 4 months in summer. During the couple of months in between we have more-or-less normal days. Includes shots of auroras and the very rare polar stratospheric nacreous clouds, which form when ozone depleting gases crystallize in the upper atmosphere in the intense cold. Summer population is about 1200 people, winter about 200. This is a demo clip I did back in 2005 to demonstrate the potential for time-lapse imgery in Antarctica. It has now been an ongoing project for me for 10 years. I have taken millions of individual photos and worn out a number of cameras. A feature film will be released eventually, keep an eye on my user page or blog for more info. Check out my other videos as well for more of life on the Ice. For those of you who have been asking about the music I used here, the first piece of music is "Whirl-Y-Reel" by Afro Celt Sound System, the second is "The Grand Finale" from the Edward Scissorhands soundtrack by Danny Elfman. FIRST ASCENT: Return To AntarcticaFeb 14, 2012 In January, 2011, First Ascent guides Peter Whittaker, Ed Viesturs, Seth Waterfall, Caroline George, Jake Norton, cinematographer Kent Harvey and their clients departed for Antarctica for a 45th anniversary climb to commemorate the 1966 first ascent of Vinson Massif, which was outfitted by Eddie Bauer. After the successful summit of Vinson, half the team departed and the other half stayed behind to make some first ski descents on some of the other untouched peaks of Antarctica.
